Specializing in Hand & Upper Extremity care, I strive to help patients recover from a broad variety of limb conditions, from the fingertips to the shoulders. I chose to practice Orthopaedic hand & upper extremity surgery because the treatments (both nonsurgical and surgical) are directly impactful in getting patients back to using their hands and arms effectively in their occupations, athletic sports, and leisure activities. I am fairly conservative in my treatment approach and try to maximize non-operative options before offering surgery. If surgical treatment is warranted, however, I give patients an honest, evidence-based outlook in regard to the expected outcomes, rehabilitation plans, and time needed to return to activities.

Why did you decide to go into healthcare?
I felt that going into healthcare, in particular Orthopaedic Surgery, was the most impactful way to affect the quality of life for people in my community. This path provided a tremendous opportunity to help patients recover from a variety of musculoskeletal illnesses and allow them to return to their work and recreational activities.
Why did you chose to work at HCH?
I chose to work at Henry Community Health because my values dovetail with the hospital’s philosophy, which is centered around kindness and compassion. I offer detailed attention to my patients’ problems, not only for the orthopedic issues at hand but also for the patient as a whole. For all patients who walk into my office, I try to learn about their backgrounds, occupations, and activities or hobbies that they enjoy doing with their hands and arms.

After a serious injury to my daughter's hand in Tennessee, she was given incorrect care from an emergency room doctor. A seasoned pediatric nurse practitioner in New Castle recommended we see Dr. Kaushik for a second opinion, and I will always be so thankful that she did. He is highly skilled and knew precisely what was wrong. He was patient with all my many questions and very kind to my daughter through the process of surgery and recovery. He worked closely with the therapists who saw her, and because of that they could quickly catch complications to treat them. I had carpal tunnel syndrome severe enough that I couldn't sleep because it felt like I was being electrocuted throughout my arms and into my back, and my hands simply stopped working. Not only did Dr. Kaushik fix my hands, he found the cubital tunnel syndrome and repaired that nerve damage as well. He and his staff were always caring and considerate to myself and my husband while I was in surgery. Since the surgeries on both arms, I have full functionality back with even better fine motor skills. As a bonus, there are barely any scars. On the hands, he follows the life line at the base of the palm so there is no visible scar. The only two scars I have are on my elbows, and they are minimal. Dr. Kaushik did a wonderful job of repairing my broken ulna with a plate & screws last December. I healed with full flexibility as well as barely a scar. Because of the location of the break and my extremely small wrists, I chose to have the hardware removed almost a year later. Within just a few short weeks I was back to almost pre-break movement & flexibility, and again the incision site was very minor. His follow-up was thorough and caring. In between my surgeries, he removed a vascular cyst from my daughter's wrist. Suffice it to say that our family spent a lot of time with Dr. Kaushik and his staff this past year. I was referred to Dr. Kaushik by my dermatologist. During the examination visit, Dr. Kaushik gave a very concise diagnosis of my problem and a thorough explanation of the needed procedure. On the day of surgery, he was prompt and very methodical as he went forward. He was effective in anesthetizing my hand, and I felt absolutely no pain during or after his work. I was prescribed a pain killing drug, but never had to open the bottle during healing. Upon my follow-up visit to remove sutures and evaluate the incision, Dr. Kaushik gave an understandable explanation of both further aftercare needs and signs of a recurrence of this problem. Had a thumb arthroplasty with tendon transfer in late 2019. Excellent explanations of procedure , risks, and benefits by MD and his staff. They worked with me on type of anesthesia that I wanted. This was as pleasant of an experience as a wrist surgery can be. There was a bit of confusion before the surgery with the surgery packet. The time of the surgery was moved a couple of times, but ultimately the surgery started at the exact time it was supposed to. Everyone was professional and kind, and the after care was super. Dr. Kaushik spent enough time with me before and after the surgery to answer all of my questions. The incision healed beautifully with a scar that is barely noticeable. I had surgery on both thumbs a little over two years apart. Same procedure for both. Since the results of the first surgery were so good I decided to have the the other hand done too. Very glad I did. I don’t have pain anymore which was clearly the goal and have great mobility after finishing physical therapy. We had to emergently go the ER for my son’s broken wrist and Dr. Kaushik was on-call that night. My son broke both forearm bones and this could not be set in the ER and my 5 year old had to go in for surgery. I broke my wrist on a Sat & told I would need surgery. I was called Monday morning and an appt was made that same week. I've dealt with a few Doctors in my day but by far Dr.Kaushik is one of the best. To start with the day after surgery he calls me to see how i'm doing..not his staff he called..that's impressive.. And Dr.Kaushik and his staff are very professional , courteous and always smiling. I Highly recommend Dr.Kaushik he's a very good surgeon !Patient Submitted Review

He was really good, explained thing to where I could understand what he was going to be doing to my arm. Did not use words I did not understand when explaining. He had really good bedside manners. I would refer him to anyone.Read more

He was excellent. He explained what he was doing. He told me of the routes of treatment that was available to me. He was also patient with me and seen me even though I was 45 minutes late for my appointment. He and the staff did not make me feel like I was wasting their time.
