Our pulmonary and sleep medicine teams coordinate with a patient’s other providers to integrate courses of care for the fastest and longest-lasting route to a better quality of life. Patients visit the main hospital for diagnostic testing and New Castle Family and Internal Medicine at Northfield Park for treatment and appointments.
Home oxygen evaluations
Oxygen evaluations assess whether a patient needs oxygen during rest or activity while at home. During a home oxygen evaluation, we will monitor the patient’s oxygen level at rest and with activity.
Pulmonary function testing
Pulmonary function testing is done for various reasons, including:
- Diagnosing & monitoring of lung disease
- Assessing current treatment of lung disease
- Checking lung function before surgery
- Evaluating exposure to chemicals
- Measuring disease progression
Sleep studies

FAQs about pulmonary medicine
Yes. If you are currently prescribed oxygen, please wear it to the hospital for your testing.
Home oxygen testing is completed at the HCH Hospital Campus (1000 N. 16th St., New Castle). You will check-in and register at the front desk, and a respiratory therapist will escort you to the testing lab.
Yes. A provider does have to order home oxygen testing to be completed.
Please refrain from smoking or vaping for at least one hour before pulmonary function testing.
If possible, do not take any nebulizer treatment or inhalers for at least four hours before pulmonary function testing. Please notify the respiratory therapist conducting your test upon arrival if you can’t do this.
Yes. If you have a rescue inhaler of albuterol prescribed to you, please bring it.
